Umatilla County is a major northeast Oregon county with nearly 80,000 people across over 3,200 square miles of widely varied topography. It is situated around the junction of Interstate 84 and Interstate 82, roughly half-way between Portland and Boise. The Columbia River facilitates river traffic, and the Pendleton Airport provides air access. Railways cross the county, with the Hinkle Rail Yard near the I84-I82 junction.
Residents enjoy numerous outdoor activities, including water recreation on the Columbia and Umatilla Rivers, and hunting, camping and hiking in the Blue Mountains and National Forests. Regular events include the Umatilla County Fair, Pendleton Round-Up, Caledonian Games, Whiskey Fest, Heart of the Country Rodeo, and more. Local breweries, wineries, chocolate shops, and restaurants serve delicious fare. There are numerous sights, such as Oregon Trail exhibits, Pendleton Air Museum, Tamastslikt Cultural Institute, and the Pendleton Underground, to name just a few.
