As the river flows, so do the adventures
On the very north of Morrow County, separating Oregon and Washington states, we have the Columbia River. For centuries, its banks served as home to man and animal alike. As time went by, it became one of the leading transport arteries. Today, it is one of the most popular destinations for adventurers. So, naturally, its wonders should be your first stops.
Columbia River Gorge
A true nature’s marvel, Columbia River Gorge stretches from Arlington all the way to Portland. This is eighty miles of pure, unbridled beauty. Regardless of the season, a visit here is bound to leave you in awe. As you drive along, the scenery will shift and change from rainforests in the west to grasslands in the east. When you get past the initial confusion, this change will become thrilling. Therefore – drive slowly, and make frequent stops. You don’t want to miss any detail!
Umatilla National Wildlife Refuge
Roughly half-way between the towns of Irrigon and Boardman, you’ll come across Umatilla National Wildlife Refuge. This perfect little escape is heaven for birdwatchers and wildlife enthusiasts. Or – for anyone that wants to leave their worries behind and enjoy untouched nature. Morrow County activities for adventurers here include:
- Wildlife watching and photography – many species call this place home. From cute otters to skittish mule deer. Even bald eagles are occasional guests here;
- Boating – see the Umatilla NWR as you slowly cruise the Columbia River.
- Hiking – the best choice if you want to experience nature in all its glory;
- Fishing – meditate on the river banks, with a fishing rod, and without a worry on your mind.
Every minute spent here is more than worth it, regardless of activity preference. So, do not miss the opportunity to visit this marvelous site.
Head where mountains meet the sky
Are riverside adventures not your cup of tea? No problem! Not all Morrow County activities for adventurers are water-oriented. All you need to do is turn toward the south. Sky-piercing peaks of the Blue Mountains will immediately catch your gaze. And right beneath them – the Umatilla National Forest. This vast green expanse is a prime destination for an aspiring adventurer.
As for the activities, well – it might be better to consider moving here. Or, at least, to buy a vacation home in Eastern Oregon. There are so many options that it would take you years to try them all out. Here are just a few:
Let nature pose for you
Wildlife watching is among the most exhilarating experiences you can find in Umatilla National Forest. You can find a fantastic variety of species among its tall trees. White-tailed and mule deer are casual passers-by. Bighorn sheep prance all over mountain slopes. Shake a bush, and a quail or grouse will pop out. And don’t worry, once you stop smiling, you’ll actually remember to take a few photos. It’s ok – we’ve all been there.
A fair warning, though: There are some less cuddly creatures here, too. Black bears and mountain lions are permanent residents. They are a rare sight and keep away from humans. Still, it’s better to stay on the safe paths.
Onward, noble steed!
There are hundreds of miles of hiking trails in the Umatilla National Forest. Yes, you read that right. Hundreds of miles of trails, winding through the wilderness, ready for you to explore them all. However, this is quite a feat. So, you might want some help with it. And that help comes in the form of everyone’s favorite four-hoofed buddy.
Only 40 minutes from Heppner and slightly off the Blue Mountain Scenic Byway is Coalmine Hill Campsite. A starting point of equestrian adventure that will take you through breathtaking landscapes. We recommend you take a ride through:
- Bald Mountain trail;
- Hells Half Acre trail;
- Willow Creek trail.
Each of these trails is more beautiful than the other. Therefore, hop on your faithful steed and enjoy them all. And when you get tired, go back and spend the serene night at the cozy campsite.
History lovers will enjoy Oregon’s vast cultural heritage
