When Opportunities Call in a New State

July 8, 2022 by Paladin Realty Team

(Submitted by Tina Martin.)

Moving to a new state often means the start of a new adventure, and there are sure to be a few hiccups at the beginning. Use the following tips and information from the Paladin Realty Team to be sure your journey has as smooth a start as possible.

Obtain Employment

If you aren’t getting a transfer through your current employer, finding a job in another state may seem difficult. However, today’s employers often reach out through online job postings. You can also apply for jobs simply by driving through the town you want to live in and looking for “help wanted” signs.

You may choose to start your own business in your new location. If that is your plan, make a business plan before you even start packing to avoid unnecessary stress. A written description of your business structure, daily operations, sources of financing, and plans for the future can improve the chance of success.

Research Your New Location

This is an effective way to learn more about schools, shopping, access to main roads, and other topics that are important to you. There’s a lot of information available online, and you can also drive through neighborhoods, talk to the people who live there, and check out maps. It’s also a good idea to look up cost information, such as utility costs and basic living expenses.

For example, if you are thinking about moving to Columbia Basin, Oregon, the average price of a home is $230,550, and homes typically sell quickly. There are many different neighborhoods in Oregon, and prices can vary significantly, so find the right balance of location and price.

One stressful aspect of relocating is finding all new doctors. But that’s now a stress you can take off your plate because there are so many legitimate online doctors available now. A virtual doctor visit may seem strange, but switching to video appointments often means faster appointment times, along with a consistent doctor no matter where you are. Plus, many of these companies accept major medical insurance.

Work With a Realtor

A local real estate agent has a lot of knowledge specific to the community, and this can speed up the process of finding a home in a neighborhood that you’ll enjoy. They will understand the different suburbs and great areas to move near if you are relocating for Oregon’s natural beauty. These professionals can also help you understand the importance of steps such as purchasing homeowners’ insurance. This coverage protects you against losses related to damage to the structure of your home, as well as any thefts or injuries that occur on your property.

Hire a Moving Company

You have a lot of tasks and details to keep track of, and professional movers can take off a lot of your load. Ask trusted friends, family, and coworkers for recommendations when it comes to moving companies. Check out posted reviews from previous customers and look up licensing, such as the USDOT number. Contact a few different companies for in-person or video surveys and estimated costs.

Although the movers will do a lot, you will still have control over your things. Plus, you’ll want to look into products that may be especially helpful in your new area and have them on hand when everything arrives. Online product reviews can be helpful if you are looking for items such as air quality control monitors for your new home, or the best vacuum for your new laminate flooring.

Consider a Home Warranty

A home warranty provides protection in the case of broken appliances and heating and cooling systems, for example. This type of warranty is especially helpful when moving into a home because you don’t know how the systems and appliances have been treated. Before you sign one of these renewable contracts, read through reviews of reputable home warranty companies and carefully research the available options to find policies that suit your budget and needs.

The more information and organization you have in place, the easier the move will be from beginning to end. Ultimately, your move should be an experience that opens you up to new opportunities and provides a lot of satisfaction.
